These brush replacements are soft enough to be easy on gums. I don't know if the charcoal actually does anything but keep the bristles from yellowing but it is nicer than white bristles. The timer mechanism in the brush itself helps my husband brush his teeth longer. I am a mildly compulsive brusher so I would brush longer than the timer. We like the recharge stand.
